Liqui-Cel EXFseries transmembrane chemical absorption contactors (degassing films) transfer gases into or out of compatible liquid streams. Thesedegassing membranesuse microporous hollow fiber membranes inside the equipment to enhance flow dynamics and take advantage of the large surface area of the membrane to strip dissolved gases. Ultra-low levels of dissolved gases can be achieved through proper system design.

Liqui-Cel EXFseries transmembrane chemical absorption contactors (degassing films) are primarily used for process water treatment applications and operate in-line without chemicals. The product is available in a variety of materials and a single unit can handle flow rates from3 gpm(0.7 m3/hr) to550 gpm(125 m3/hr). Liqui-Celdegassing membranescan be connected in parallel or series configurations to handle larger flow rates and achieve better degassing performance. Liqui-Celdegassing filmscan achieve very low dissolved gas levels, which are difficult to achieve with conventional gas removal techniques. Smaller flow products, such asLiqui-Cel'sEXF-2.5x8andEXF-4x13series, can even be used in the laboratory for feasibility testing and low-flow point-of-use applications, such as ultrapure rinse water in wet bench processes.
Why Dissolved Gas Control is Critical
Dissolved gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide cause many difficulties in industrial processes. They oxidize and corrode metal piping and critical equipment, resulting in additional costs and downtime. In industries such as semiconductor and display panel manufacturing that rely on ultrapure degassed water, dissolved gases can affect production efficiency and product quality. Ion exchange column deionization is a common technology for producing high purity water. By reducing the frequency of bed regeneration cycles, carbon dioxide removal helps reduce operating costs and chemical usage. In electrodeionization(EDI), water quality can be improved by reducing CO2 loading that can hinder the removal of target substances such as silica and boron.

About Liqui-Cel degassing film
Liqui-Celdegassing membranesprovide efficient dissolved gas control in a compact design. Liqui-Cel degassing membranesdo not require chemicals to operate and can effectively replace chemical treatment options such as oxygen scavengers in boiler feed water or alkali/acids in reverse osmosis(RO)and other deionization systems. This may be particularly beneficial for facilities wishing to reduce on-site chemical use as part of their sustainability objectives.
Working principle of Liqui-Cel degassing film
Liqui-Cel degassing membranesuse microporous or nonporous semipermeable hollow fiber membranes placed within the contactor housing. InLiqui-Cel's EXF,SP, andMM-0.5x1andMM-0.75x1seriesdegassing membranes, liquid flows on the outside of the hollow fiber membrane while vacuum and/or purge gas is applied to the inside of the hollow fiber during operation. InLiqui-Cel's otherMMseriesdegassing membranes, the flow of liquid and gas is reversed: liquid flows inside the hollow fiber membranes, while vacuum and/or purge gas is applied to the outside of the hollow fibers.
The application of vacuum or purge gas creates a difference in gas concentration levels between the interior (lumen side) and exterior (shell side) of the hollow fiber membrane. This concentration difference facilitates rapid and efficient dissolved gas transfer.
