    Membrane electrolysis is a process in which two electrode reactions, namely cathodic reduction and anodic oxidation, are related to the transport and conversion of charged ions. In membrane electrolysis, electrode reaction is an essential step in the actual material separation process. The task of the membrane is to hydraulically separate the anode circuit (anolyte) from the cathode circuit (catholyte) to avoid unwanted side reactions, to combine electrode reactions with separation steps or to separate the products formed at the electrodes. In the case of water electrolysis, these may be gaseous products, such as oxygen and hydrogen,

    As part of the concept of electricity to gas, hydrogen production byPEMelectrolysis is one of the key technologies for future energy production. This process represents a reversal of the function of fuel cells in which the basic components  H2and  O2react electrochemically by applying a voltage. As a highly functional membrane, the proton conductive membrane is a critical core component, and functional chemical side groups in the polymer matrix result in the transfer ofH  +-ions from the anode through the membrane to the cathode. There, these protons recombine with electrons, which are also conducted through electrical conductors to the cathode to form high-purity hydrogen. At the same time, the oxygen produced is separated on the anode side and can also be stored in a very pure form or used directly.

    Special membrane types
    fumasep FAD anion exchange membrane is a membrane type with excellent proton and anion transport performance and high metal ion retention efficiency. These characteristics are essential for operation in diffusion dialysis systems for recovering free acids from used process bath solutions, e.g. from surface finishing or textile processing. Depending on the process, up to95%of the free acid and up to80%of the alkali can be recovered in this way and returned to the production process, which means that chemicals required for finishing baths or wastewater treatment can also be recovered. FAPis a chlorine-resistant anion exchange membrane that can also transport protons. The film is suitable for various applications.

    Fumapem®high performance membranes for fuel cells:
     
    perfluorosulfonic acid/polytetrafluoroethylene copolymer is a standard polymer material for proton exchange membranes for fuel cell applications. The film has high chemical and mechanical resistance characteristics, which can also be improved by using reinforcing fabrics to ensure the handling and service life of the product.
     
    For LT-PEM
    Membranesfor both applications in fuel cells are based on PFSA polymers and can be used as long side chains(LSC)or short side chains(SSC). For stationary applications,LSC PFSAhas been used since the 1990s. Thefilm FUMATECH made on this polymer isfumapem F-940-RFS. This is comprehensively characterized by various electrochemical methods and shows very good resistance in terms of chemical and mechanical stability.
     
    SSC PFSA is the right raw material for applications that require higher tolerances in terms of power density and relative humidity. Fumapem FS-930-RFSfilm has low resistance and excellent ability to cope with short-term humidity fluctuations during operation without sacrificing performance.
     
    Both F-940-RFS andFS-930-RFSfilms have been tested under various stress conditions with excellent results in terms of life expectancy. Short side-chain filmfumapem FS-715-RFS iscommonly used in automotive applications.
     
    The 15µ m thick enhancement film is characterized by a particularly low electrical resistance and self-humidification under dry conditions even at high current densities. Water produced by the cathode helps increase the conductivity of the membrane. Considering the small thickness, the membrane shows very good mechanical properties and low hydrogen transfer even under different conditions.
     
    Due to the need for high reliability, some marine and aerospace applications use fumapem PFSA films with thicknesses of 80 to120µ m. The system operates using pure hydrogen and oxygen, and the fuel cell operates at high pressure on the cathode side. Both LSCandSSCmaterials, whether as plain foils or reinforced films, meet target values for performance, durability, pressure operation, and extremely low hydrogen transfer.     Due to its superior performance, hydrocarbon membranes are used in special fuel cells, such as°high temperature PEM without humidification above150 C, or DMFC applications where the fuel used is low crossover.
     
    High temperature proton exchange membrane (HTPEM) is°the core of fuel cells above 150 C. As with classicalPEMfuel cells, hydrogen is electrochemically split into protons and electrons at the anode. Protons travel through the membrane to the cathode, while electrons travel through an external conductor to produce an electric current. At the cathode, protons combine with electrons and further react with oxygen to form water and heat. There are two different ways to generate hydrogen.     Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) are of particular interest for portable applications because they can be used very conveniently as an energy source anywhere there is no electricity or natural gas. The fuel used is methanol, which is converted into protons and carbon dioxide at the anode while generating electricity. At the cathode, protons and electrons combine and oxidize with oxygen to form water, releasing heat.
     
    Membrane materials for HTPEM

    Porous membranes are characterized by low cost, low surface resistance, adequate selectivity and possible electrolyte transfer.
     
    The advantage of our closed ion exchange membranes is that they achieve high coulomb yields and the lowest possible electrolyte transfer.
     
    Cation exchange membranes are primarily liquid-tight proton conducting barriers to electrolytes. Since all RFB systems are based on cations in different oxidation states, selective proton conductive anion exchange membranes with high rejection of other cations may be the best choice for achieving maximum efficiency.
